This United Action is created in collaboration with Women Force NFT, who believes that Web3 and NFTs present a chance to raise funds to support women. Currently. their main focus lies on the amazon rainforest in Brazil. Brazil is home to 60% of the world’s largest rainforest, the Amazon. However, in the past decades, Brazil’s rainforest areas, have experienced extensive deforestation. The loss of so much biodiversity results in threats to the environment and the people. Women Force NFT has decided to donate 40% of its NFT sales towards charities preserving the amazon.
With a population of more than 180 million and covering almost half of South America in land mass, Brazil is the world’s fifth largest country in terms of both area and population. Due to its large size, it has a complex environmental architecture with unique challenges. The country has large reserves of biodiversity and an extensive hydrologic system and is home to the world’s largest rainforest: The Amazon. The Brazilian Amazon extends to more than 5 million km2, representing 60% of Brazil’s territory
In the past decades, Brazil’s rainforest areas have experienced extensive deforestation as a result of the expanding agricultural industry. The proliferation of farmlands to accommodate the demands of these products has wiped out large swaths of rainforest. Additionally, the large-scale inefficiencies of Brazilian agribusiness remain in practice today and do not bode well for future deforestation.
Despite the importance of the Amazon, deforestation levels are swiftly approaching a point of no return. The lack of protection has domestic and international consequences, such as the creation of a cycle of deforestation, drought, and loss of biodiversity; as well as amplifying climate change and its impacts.
Environmental concerns also have social implications. Threats to forest areas often threaten marginalized groups, such as family farmers, indigenous, and traditional populations. Unfortunately, currently, there seems to be little political pressure because the environmental crisis falls behind other relevant issues such as human rights, poverty, corruption and economic growth.
Deforestation is an incredibly complex problem and that means the solutions must be as well. Fortunately, many see the importance of the rainforest and the non-profit sector has been able to step up. Experts agree that tackling deforestation in the Amazon requires a new development vision for the region. That means introducing policies that promote the sustainable use of forest products and the expansion of agro-commodities over degraded lands.
Current solutions emphasise the importance of multi-stakeholder engagement in regard to monitoring, environmental control and accountability, land use, creation of protected areas, and promotion of sustainable production activities. On one hand, efforts must focus on improving policies on a national and international level while also overcoming legal barriers. On the other hand, there is a necessity to collaborate and work with the individuals of the regions to create sustainable solutions that benefit those most affected by the problem.
The non-profit sector has the ability to pick up where the government does not have the capacity to help. Charities can use their influence to advocate and lobby on political levels, while also closely collaborating with local Amazonian communities. In practice, this means lobbying for indigenous human and land rights, campaigning against destructive industries, or developing sustainable practices for farmers to stay efficient while also preserving the rainforest.
Donate to this United Action to make your money as effective as possible. Our research team rigorously evaluates each charity, and curates collections of the top performing among them, so you can tackle the same urgent problem with different solutions.
Bring back biodiversity and improve the lives for future generations.
The Black Jaguar Foundation works to reforest the Amazon rainforest and the Cerrado savanna, in Brazil. They plant native trees on a massive scale in collaboration with local landowners to realize the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor: bringing back biodiversity and improving the lives for all future generations. The organisation sees farmers as partners and develops agreements to restore areas of their land and allow them to become compliant with the Brazilian Forest Code. These areas become Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA`s) and by law must last intact forever.
We keep the Amazon Forest standing
SOS Amazonia's mission is to promote the conservation of biodiversity and the growth of environmental awareness in the Amazon. They work towards generating social changes and to maintain the existing forest.
In each of the United Actions below, you’ll find curated collections of top-performing charities, all tackling the same urgent problem from different angles.
