empowers women to pursue their rights to a healthy life

Problem

Women’s and girls’ needs are different from those of men, when it comes to water, sanitation and hygiene, and when it comes to sexual and reproductive health. Women need information, services and facilities that are designed with their needs in mind. For instance concerning menstruation, pregnancy and safety from (sexual) violence. At the same time, women and girls face disproportionate challenges in these areas. Many women do not have access to information and are not included in decision making at the household, community, national and international level. Even if those decisions concern their own bodies and lives. This means women’s rights to a healthy life are not being upheld.

Solution

Together with women and girls in Africa and Asia, we work on a healthy life for all. Through our local partner organisations, we provide information and training. Not just to the women themselves: we work with the entire community to ensure taboos are discussed and women-friendly facilities and services are established. At the same time, we ask (local) governments to work on women-friendly policies in the areas of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) and Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), and to include women and other groups that are often left behind in decision making. This way, women are empowered to pursue their rights to live a healthy life.
