Samos Volunteers

instills sense of normality through psychosocial support, non-formal education and hygiene services

Problem

The drawn-out asylum process often forces individuals and families to settle in the dangerously overcrowded Samos Hotspot for months or even years. The conditions in the camp are atrocious: there is one doctor, there are long queues for food, sanitation is poor, access to water is limited and there is no electricity. Most people have nothing but tents, sleeping bags, tarps and construction material to keep themselves from the cold, wind and rain.

Solution

Samos Volunteers provides support for people living in the Samos Hotspot through various educational programs, services and activities. Everyone is welcome to drink a cup of tea and charge their telephone in our Alpha Centre, where we teach up to 23 classes daily. Our Laundry Station is the only free laundry service for people living in the Hotspot, where up to 2,000 bags of laundry are washed and dried per month. Our Women's Saturday and Women's Activities provide a safe learning environment for women and children. We aim to bring humanity to people's time on the island.
