Global Alliance for Rabies Control

eliminates human deaths from dog rabies by supporting government-driven rabies elimination efforts

Problem

An estimated 59,000 people die of rabies every year, with a child dying every 15 minutes from this horrific disease. Rabies is a neglected disease, disproportionately affecting poor communities, predominantly in Africa and Asia. The lack of political will and support for this preventable disease means that those suffering and dying from rabies remain silent victims. Dogs are responsible for almost all human rabies cases, and because of this, they are persecuted, inhumanely culled, and stoned to death out of fear, despite there being a simple solution to end the disease in both people and dogs – vaccination.

Solution

GARC is the leading, international rabies non-profit organization that supports national- and community-led rabies elimination efforts by providing specialized tools, expert advice, and technical assistance to end human deaths from dog rabies by 2030. 1) Health-system strengthening: We strengthen national and community health systems to deliver lasting change. 2) Education and awareness: We educate people – with a special focus on children - on animal bite prevention, rabies prevention and primary animal healthcare to reduce the number of cases, prevent misinformation, and save human and animal lives from rabies. 3) Surveillance: Without good monitoring, there can be no measure of success. We build and strengthen rabies surveillance to ensure that progress is measured, and success demonstrated. 4) Collaboration: We establish partnerships and collaborative efforts to maximize impact towards a common good, with a primary focus on sustainable, government-centric efforts, as well as through uniting civil society to facilitate a coordinated and effective approach.
